5 classic email personalities and how to respond to each
5 classic email personalities and how to respond to each5 classic email personalities and how to respond to eachWe all have a tendency to misread client emails. The tones we hear in our heads can dictate our responses, which could hinder the working relationship and impact the success of a project.Unfortunately, we cant pick what personalities land in our inbox. But we can try to understand them and pinpoint certain emails, helping us learn how to communicate more efficiently with clients (without pulling our hair out). Our PR teamhas generated a list of the top five types of personalities we landsee every day in our inbox, along with solutions for the best way to respond. The hounderYou went to bed with a clean inbox, only to wake up to a horrifying number of unread emails from the same person, each discussing the same topic with disjointed thoughts and ideas. Did you reply quickly enough?Clearly not, because now you have another slew of unread emails following up on whether you had r eceived those previous emails. Suddenly, your inbox has been taken over by a client who needs affirmation, constant communication, and handholding at their convenience.Be calm its all about training your clients by setting email boundaries. Do not answer those emails right away (unless there is a serious crisis). Send one single email that addresses only the pertinent information crucial for campaign success. These emails create a false sense of urgency and will only cause you more stress if you dont take a step back and realize this barrage doesnt mean the world is falling apart. The hounder email personality simply wants to know youre there and are listening. The novelistAll you needed was one simple answer to a quick question you had, or a quick quote regarding the nachrichtensendung youre pushing. Instead, you have received the annotated version of War and Peace. Our best suggestion? Skim the page until you find keywords where theactual response to your original inquiry is hiding, or be extremely specific in the what you are asking for, limiting their ability to diverge into tangents.Once youve done this, explain why the information they provided is important to the success of the campaign. Be sure to move forward in casethey decide at the last minute to pull out of an amazing opportunity. After all, those novel-length emails will prove to be your best asset to help your client recall decisions theyve made that have stalled any success on your part. The selective muteThese clients seem to be impossible to reach during pivotal moments of a campaign. They take days to respond to an action that needs immediate attention, or take weeks to greenlight a timely pitch. The radio silence becomes too much to handle when they stop calling into those mandatory conference calls that theyd to schedule weekly. To deal with this reality, you should prepare all materials for future use. Collect information ahead of time so that you do not have to rely heavily on their presence. If they need to greenlight every idea, get their approval ahead of time in an email so you have permission to go after timely opportunities. Dont be afraid to call your client when youre stuck between a jupe and a hard place and cannot move forward unless they are available. The GIF-erSometimes, its hard not to laugh when a client is in good spirits and sends an unexpected GIF to highlight a success, no matter how big or small. However, were talking about the GIF-ers who incessantly send GIFs that become a waste of space in our inbox.Dont feel tempted to send GIFs in response they are distracting and are not going to aid in your teams productivity. GIFs and memes can quickly become overwhelming and misconstrued within seconds Avoid reading into them by simply ignoring them. This rule also applies for emojis. The tattlerDont you love it when everyone in the office is copied on an email that only requires the anfangsbuchstabe persons response? We call these people Tattlers, since they seem to want every conversation in every persons inbox.Discretion and looping in the correct recipients does not seem to be of concern. Always assume every email you send and receive will have outside eyes on it. Be aware of the content in your email, and clearly label who you are directly emailing. Follow your clients protocol in continuing to loop in the team, even if they one-off email you. This allows the client to slowly reshape their CC-ing tendencies.Bryanne Lawless is the owner of BLND Public Relations. This article originally appeared on BusinessCollective.

15 common writing mistakes you are making right now
15 common writing mistakes you are making right now15 common writing mistakes you are making right nowLet me start this by introducing myselfImMaddie, copy editor and editorial assistant at The Everygirl. Much of my time is spent copy editing - which means that I edit stories that come in for both grammar and style. I graduated with my degree in editorial journalism last spring, where my entire life consisted of editing and writing. Long story short, Im a grammar junkie, and have edited lots and lots of stories in my 22 years - and (very, very unfortunately) am a living, breathing example of the meme that corrects peoples your to *youre in the middle of a texting argument.Through this, I learned that when it comes to grammatical errors, people tend to continually make the saatkorn few mistakes - whether theyre a professional writer or havent touched a book since 8th grade English class. From stories for our site to billboards over the highway, these mistakes areeverywhere.Follow La dders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIve always wished I could shout them from my rooftop to everyone I know, but this is the next best thing. Without further ado, here are the fruchtwein common writing mistakes I see, and all of the tricks Ive used to remember them1. DecadesThis is hands down the most common mistake I see - down to brands having it wrong on T-shirts.You arent a 90s baby, youre a 90s baby.*shakes fists in air*Think of the apostrophe as replacing the numbers youre omitting. Full decades do not have any punctuation.Right 90s/ 1990sI welches born in the 1990s.I was born in the 90s.Wrong 90s/ 1990sI was born in the 1990s.I was born in the 90s.2. Its vs. itsThis is a tough one. Generally, apostrophes indicate possession, but with its, its the exact opposite. Its is a contraction forit is.Its 30 degrees outside. Its is thepossessiveof it.The dog hurt its paw.3. Accept vs. exceptEve n though these words are pronounced similarly, their meanings are completely different.Accept meanstoreceive. She accepted the award.Except meansto exclude.I like all vegetables except broccoli.4. Affect vs. effectI know professional writers that arestillstumped by this one. Affect and effect have similar meanings, but one is used as a noun, and the other as a verb.Affect is a verb, meaningto influence. The game will affect the teams rankings. The rain will affect my commute.Effect is a noun, meaningto cause. The medicine had horrible side effects.(The tip I use for this one is to remembersideeffects - the most common use of the word.)5. Follow-up vs. follow upEver sat and debated this in the email subject to someone you just had an vorstellungsgesprch with before reluctantly pressing send and hoping you didnt just blow your chances at a new job? Same.Follow-upis a noun and adjective. Hyphenate when used before a noun.I sent her a follow-up email.Follow upis a verb.I contacted the manag er to see if I could follow up.6. 6am in the morningI see so many instances where people describe time as 6am in the morning or 10pm at night. We already know 6am is in the morning, so following with in the morning is redundant.7. Who vs. whomWhois used as the subject of a sentence.Whomis used when someone is the object of a verb (or preposition).TipWhen youre stuck, try substituting he or she, and him or her into the sentence where who is.If he or she works, usewho. If him or her works, usewhom.ExampleWho/whom ate my lunch? She ate my lunch vs. Her ate my lunch. The first is obviously right, so the right word would be who.Who ate my lunch?8. Whos vs. whoseWhosis a contraction for who is.Whos there?Whoseis the possessive of who.Whose coat is this?9. Their vs. there vs. theyreTheiris a possessive pronoun.Their house has a pool.Thereindicates direction.Look over thereTheyreis a contraction for they are.Theyre moving to New York.10. Principle vs. principalAprincipalis in charge of a schoo l.I went to the principals office.Aprinciplemeans a truth, law, or motivating force.I wasnt mad at what happened, I was mad at the principle of it.11. Roll vs. roleTorollis to move on wheels (or a piece of bread you eat).My car rolled down the hill.Aroleis a part played by a person in a situation.I described my job role.12. Peek vs. peakThe top of a mountain is apeak(or the maximum of something).I climbed to the peak of Everest.Peekmeans to look quickly. Here is a sneak peek of our new collection.13. Then vs. thanThenis used to express time or what will come next.Im going to go for a run, then go to the office.Thanis used for comparison.I am taller than my sister.14. SemicolonsAh, semicolons - the form of punctuation that seems to strike the most fear into people considering using them. Semicolons arenotas complicated as people think. Here are the most common instances that I personally use themFor clarification in a series. If an item in a list requires a comma itself, separate it with a semicolon.I saw Ted, a farmer Fred, an accountant and Ned, a policeman. Before the word however when however is joining two independent clauses (which is almost always).I love cats however, I am allergic to them.To combine two ideas that are equal in position or rankAbigail likes Americanos Josie likes lattes.15. ParallelismParallelism is matching grammatical structure within a sentence.Basically, everything in your sentences needs to agree in tense and form. This makes sentences clear and a lot more readable.WrongWe went skiing in the alps, swam in the ocean, and drove in the desert.RightWe went skiingin the alps, swimmingin the ocean, and drivingin the desert. (All of the verbs are now the same tense.)WrongGyms can be an incredibly exclusionary environment.RightGyms can be incredibly exclusionary environments.(Gyms is plural, so environment should be as well.)This article originally appeared on The Everygirl. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will ma ke you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

The Debate about Blocking Social Media in the Workplace
The Debate about Blocking Social Media in the WorkplaceThe Debate about Blocking Social Media in the WorkplaceThe Debate about Blocking Social Media in the Workplace HoltzRecent trends show that more than half of US employers are blocking social media access at the workplace. A variety of fears have led to the restriction, led by certainty that time spent on facebook inc or Twitter is productivity the company can never get back. By implementing a complete block of social media, leaders and managers are able to rest easy, secure in the knowledge that their employees are spending their time doing the work for which theyre being paid.Nothing could be farther from the truth. The truth isBlocking social media access is a costly exercise that simply doesnt work.Employee use of social mediain the workplacedoesnt necessarily adversely affect productivity. There are distinct advantages to allowing and even encouraging employees to use social media sites while at work. The future of business i s a networked future. Employers who figure out the right balance will be more competitive. Those that dont will be left behind. The Futility of BlockingDo you have a smart phone? An iPhone, a BlackBerry, a Droid, a Palm Pre or any of the dozens of other models available? You can surf the Web, access social networks, send and receive messages on Twitter and engage in all kinds of other online activities. So can your employees.Blocking access to social sites via your company networks wont stop most employees from engaging in the same behavior the blocks were designed to prevent. Ann Cavoukian, privacy commissioner for the Canadian province of Ontario, has called blocking a mistake. Its like waving the proverbial red flag in front of your staff its almost a challenge to them to find a way around it, she is quoted. She adds that blocking social media access is counterproductive, with the time employees spend finding a way to the sites they want to visit being more time-consuming than ac tually visiting the sites.Productivity Trends Tell the StoryIf worker productivity is at an all-time low, why do US Department of Labor statistics paint a different picture in which productivity continues to rise? The answer is simple. Productivity is not a measure of the time employees spend at work engaged in non-work activities. Its a measure of output. And the use of social media can actually help increase employee output. The question isnt whether someone is spending time watching YouTube videos at work. The question is whether theyre work is getting done, on time and to the quality standards expected of them.A study conducted at the University of Melbourne found that employees with access to social networks were actually more productive than employees in companies that block access. According to Dr. Brent Coker, employees who can reward themselves between the completion of one task and the start of another with a visit to their Facebook or MySpace page are more invigorated and get more done. According to the study, they get 9 percent more accomplished than their blocked counterparts.Getting to the Crux of the MatterThere will always be employees who waste time. There always have been, long before computers were introduced to the workplace. Addressing this problem is a management issue, not a technological one. (Does anyone really think that somebody genuinely wasting time on MySpace is suddenly going to become a shining example of productivity because IT blocked access?) Supervisors need to manage by exception those employees whose use of social networks genuinely is affecting their productivity.Theres more to the productivity issue, though. Among knowledge workers, the fact that they are networked means they can work anywhere. Think about it. Do you check your email on your mobile phone as soon as you get up? Thats a work-related activity at home. Employees review reports while at their kids soccer games. They take overseas calls after dinner. They draft reports before bed. Thus it seems disingenuous to not include the time employees spend doing work when theyre not at the office in your calculations. How many of your knowledge workers arrive at 9 and leave at 5? An employee who arrives at 730 a.m. and leaves at 630 p.m. can spend two hours on Facebook and totenstill put in a solid eight hours of work plus the time they spend working when theyre away from the office. Its also worth remembering that the same productivity paranoia was raised over the telephone and email.Author BioShel Holtz is principal of Holtz Communication + Technology, consulting with organizations on the effective use of online platforms for communication. Interest Inventory - What Are Your Likes and Dislikes
Interest Inventory - What Are Your Likes and DislikesInterest Inventory - What Are Your Likes and DislikesWhat is your favorite thing to do on a day at the beach surf or lie around reading? In your day off from work, would you choose to build a bookshelf or balance your checkbook? Do you prefer to work on a project independently or as part of a team? There are no right or wrong answers to any of ansicht questions. Your responses merely indicate your interests- which leisure activities are enjoyable and which are notlage, what tasks you like to do and which ones you avoid, and how you prefer to perform your job. Many years ago, psychologists realized that people who worked in the same occupation shared similar interests. By discovering these likes and dislikes, one can find a career that is a good fit. Psychologists now had a goal find a way to learn about peoples interests. Interest Inventories to the Rescue In 1927, E.K. Strong, a psychologist, developed the first interest inven tory. This toolmeasured individuals interests and compared them to those of people working in various occupations. It was called the Strong Vocational Interest Blank. This tool has undergone many revisions and name changes over the years. It is now called the Strong Interest Inventory (SII), and it remains one of the most popularself assessment tools thatcareer development professionals use today. Other interest inventories on the market include the Kuder Occupational Interest Survey, Self-Directed Search, and the Campbell Interest and Skill Survey. How to Take an Interest Inventory A career counselor or other career development professional will administer an interest inventory as part of a complete self assessment. In addition to looking at your interests, an assessment should also take into account yourpersonality type, aptitude, and work values. Taking an interest inventory requires completing a questionnaire with a series of items about your likes and dislikes. They will me asure, for example, your interests regarding leisure activities, work-related activities, people with whom you prefer to work, and school subjects. To get the most accurate results, answer each question as honestly as possible. There are no right or wrong answers. The counselor wont judge you based on your responses. When answering questions that are related to work-related activities, do not worry about whether or not you have the skills needed to complete the particular tasks. It doesnt matter at this point in the career planning process. Indicate only your interest in the activity. Decide during the career exploration phase, which will occur later, whether or not to undergo the training and education to acquire them. Getting and Understanding Your Results After completing an interest inventory, you will receive a report. Go over it with the professional who administered it. He or she will help you understand your results which should also include a list of occupations that ma y be suitable for someone who shares your interests. Some of those careers may be appealing and others will not. Just because an occupation shows up in your self assessment results, regardless of the tool, it doesnt necessarily mean its the best choice for you. Before choosing acareer, it is essential tolearn about it.An occupation may be unsuitable for a variety of reasons, even if you share interests with other people who work in it. Adding your Real-World College Experience to a Resume
Adding your Real-World College Experience to a Resume Adding your Real-World College Experience to a Resume Before beginning the grueling application process, consider including many of the required activities in which you participated in order to get your degree: Most of your time spent in college (supposedly) is spent on coursework. This can include time spent working as a group member in a large project or all of the investigative and research skills you developed writing your capstone piece or thesis. All of this can be included in your resume to give you a potential edge over your competition, especially if your work is on a project that relates to the specific field of work for which you are applying. Simply add a section in your resume that lists your relevant major classes and the experience and specialized skills gained in those courses. Many students choose to work part-time jobs throughout their college years in order to reduce the amount of loans they receive or just to earn some spending cash. Donât discount the experience youâve gained working in a retail environment or the food service industry. Throughout your time at work you have undoubtedly learned to how to approach all sorts of problems generated by all sorts of people, and people skills is a highly sought after trait in a potential employee. Also, showing that you were able to work through your successful school career gives employers confidence in your ability to manage your time and resources while showing your ability to commit to a course of action and see it through. Most secondary-education institutions offer students opportunities to lead a campus group, club, association, or other activity. And while having a fancy leadership title is great resume candy, itâs best to show how you managed the people and resources under your care during your time in a leadership position. Employers will also want to see how your efforts impacted your organization or school as a whole. Most hiring managers have been found to consider volunteer work as job experience. If you spent some of your free time working as a volunteer, donât discount the value of that effort. Focus on what you accomplished during your time at the volunteer organization and explain the skills you learned during the experience. Whether it was work at a local homeless shelter or as a campaigner in a local political campaign, list the details of your position and let your potential employers know the positive effects your work had on the organization and people that you served. Stuck in a Rut Get Out of Your Career Comfort Zone
Stuck in a Rut Get Out of Your Career Comfort Zone Stuck in a Rut Get Out of Your Career Comfort Zone Weâve probably all heard this old adage when it comes to fitness: to exercise muscles in new ways, get out of your comfort zone, and achieve better- and motivating- results. The same advice applies when it comes to your career: move beyond your zone of familiarity if youâve been stuck in the same job, using the same skills, and interacting with the same people in the same ways. Especially for those of us who are mid-career, itâs easy to get comfortable with what we know, if weâve achieved a certain level of success- not to mention the comfort of getting a regular paycheck. But therein lies the rub. Moving out of your comfort zone can be scary, but itâs really the smart thing to do when it comes to your career. And that means more than just finding ways to keep your skills current. It means keeping your resume fresh by exploring completely new skills, taking classes that move you to think about your current job in new ways, or finding a spark that may even fire you up toward a new career altogether. Working in a traditional office environment can be another kind of âcomfort zone.â Just as pushing yourself in a fitness program can be inspiring, finding work that offers the benefit of a flexible schedule or a telecommuting option can push you in new and unexpected directions. Here are some ideas to help get you out of your career comfort zone: 1. Take an online career assessment. If youâre stuck in a career rut, you might be stuck in the wrong career entirely. A number of organizations offer free online tests that can help you figure out which career might make you happy. 2. Find a course that teaches you something completely new. Especially in the ever-evolving world of technology, thereâs always new stuff to learn. Whatâs more, looking at activities you may think of as recreational passions may be a good place to start cooking, crafts, gardening, or anything that floats your boat. 3. Experiment on the side. Telecommuting and flexible jobs are particularly adaptable for people thinking of breaking out of their current career mold. Remote work for a company in a new field may give you a fresh perspective. 4. Tap into your inner entrepreneur. If what you really want is to be your own boss, then âhanging out a shingleâ can be the truest expression of moving out of your current comfort zone and into something completely different. Money concerns may an issue, so some advanced financial planning may be in order. Above all, remind yourself: change is good! It can be intimidating, but change can lead to real growth, both personally and professionally. Readers, are you stuck in a career comfort zone? Tell us about it in the comments section below!

How to Find Your Career Path
How to Find Your Career Path How to Find Your Career Path Whether youâre new to the workforce or a seasoned professional, use these exercises to clarify your job goals. Q: I graduated college with a degree in finance in 2001. After graduation I started a construction company which I am currently still running. I am looking for a career change and donât know which direction to go in. â" Dan K. from MichiganA: Many people talk about ending up in a line of work that âfoundâ them â" they fell into their career paths. They may not have sought the opportunity out, but it ultimately led them down a career path they now love. Take Steve Jobs, for example. His passion may have become technology, but if you look at his college years, this was not necessarily a path he chose for himself early on.Some people know exactly what they want to do with their lives from the time theyâre in college â" or earlier â" while others pursue a string of different occupations earlier on in their careers, still trying to figure out what is the right path for them. For those of you who are still looking for the right career path, whether youâre just finishing college or youâre many years into your career, it can be frustrating to not know what you truly want to do with the rest of your life. You know youâre unhappy in your current job, but you donât know where to go next.Iâm dedicating this weekâs article to those of you still on the hunt for your career path. Iâd like to share with you some exercises Iâve learned from other career coaches and HR professionals over the years that I think might be useful during your exploration. Before you jump ship at your current job, ask yourself why you are unhappy. Is it: the commute? the company culture ? the leadership or, specifically, your relationship with your supervisor? the work itself? Or is something unpleasant in your personal life affecting your work? The answers to these questions will help you decide the appropriate next step for you.Billboard Top HitsAdapted from The Five OâClock Club ® âSeven Storiesâ exerciseWhenever youâre trying to fine-tune your job goals, I recommend first taking an inventory of your key strengths and passions. Ask yourself honestly: What am I great at? What am I not so great at? What am I excellent at but unexcited by? What do I excel at and become passionate about? If youâre having difficulty answering the last question, then this exercise is for you. Think back to your most rewarding and satisfying accomplishments over the course of your career. Brainstorm at least 10 accomplishments, and then choose which 5 you are most proud of.Answer the following questions for each of your top 5 accomplishments: Why were these accomplishments most important to me? What about them did I enjoy most? What was my involvement? Was I tasked with the project, or did I initiate it on my own? What was my key motivation? (Personal or social recognition; large-scale, companywide recognition, etc.) What was the environment like? Was it entrepreneurial and fast-paced? Slower but controlled? What was the focus of the project? (The arts, new program development, social consciousness, etc.) What core values drove my work during this project? (Collaboration, empowerment, accountability, innovation, efficiency, diversity, service excellence, etc.) This exercise will help you identify the key skills, core values and ideal work environment where you thrive the best. Use this information to brainstorm possible career paths and associated job goals.9 Lives Adapted from Karen James Chopra, LPC, MCC, NCC of Chopra Careers )This exercise is very useful for those who like to think very creatively, or have no idea what they want to do next. The 9 Lives exercise is pretty simple: You have 9 different lives. You must work in all 9 lives. You will not win the lottery, marry rich, or receive a huge inheritance. Whatever skill set or experience you need to do the job, you have it. However much money you need to make to be happy, you make it. Every job has equal prestige. What 9 jobs would you hold? The great thing about this exercise is that it removes all the barriers â" all the âBut, â¦Ã¢ statements are gone, so youâre free to choose professions that truly interest you.Once youâve written out your list of jobs, take a step back and review it. What do you see? What donât you see? Are there any themes (i.e., nature lover, autonomous worker, creative, corporate setting â" or lack thereof)? What donât you see? The absence of certain jobs is just as telling as what you chose to put down.Career Run-DownAdapted from Karen James Chopra, LPC, MCC, NCC of Chopra Careers )This exercise is best suited for the more pragmatic professionals who find the â9 Livesâ approach too open-ended or idealistic. To do a âCareer Run-Downâ, take a piece of paper and make 3 columns: Column 1: Make a list of every job youâve held (just job titles/company names) in your career. Column 2: List (in nitty-gritty detail) what youlikedabout each of those jobs. Be as specific as possible. Column 3: List (in nitty-gritty detail) what youdislikedabout each of those jobs. Be as specific as possible. You can also mark up a copy of your resume and perform the same exercise. Similar to the 9 Lives challenge, take a step back and look for themes in what youâve loved and been passionate about, and what type of work or working environment you did not enjoy.I donât expect you to do each of these activities â" find the one that makes the most sense for you, given your current situation and needs, and leave the other exercises alone. The key is to find the right exercise that will help you brainstorm the next direction in your career. These are great exercises to do with a couple friends or family members. Share your responses and brainstorm as a group what opportunities might make sense for you to explore. I recommend checking out WetFeetâs careers and industry profiles to learn more about different career tracks within specific industries or functions.Once you have a few ideas, do your research. Do a little Googling to find some popular publications that specialize in the line of work or industry youâre interested in. Explore face-to-face and online networking opportunities to learn more about the work, and connect with people that could be great candidates for an informational interview. If youâre very eager to learn about a new career track youâve recently discovered, consider attending a trade show to meet more people in the industry and learn more about its inner workings.Transitioning to a new career is never an easy process. Keep in mind that you may have to take a few âleapfrogâ opportunities along the way before you reach your ideal job. However, itâs a price worth paying if you ultimately end up in a career that you truly enjoy.

Bronze Star Medal in the United States Military
Bronze Star Medal in the United States Military Bronze Star Medal in the United States Military 01 Description The Bronze Star Medal is a 1 ½ inch in circumscribing width star made of Bronze. Overlaid in the middle of the star is a 3/16-inch wide bronze star. All rays of both stars come together at their center line. HEROIC OR MERITORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT is engraved on the reverse side. There is a space available for the recipientâs name to be engraved. A rounded corner, rectangular metal loop holds the star on the ribbon. 02 Ribbon The ribbon for the Bronze Star has seven stripes and is 1 3/8 inches wide. The first stripe is a White stripe of 1/32 inches. The second is Scarlet and 9/16 inches. The third is white and 1/32 inches, next in the center is a stripe of Ultramarine Blue and 1/8 inch. A White, 1/32 inch stripe is next, followed by a Scarlet, 9/16 inch stripe and a White 1/32 inch stripe. 03 Criteria Any person whom while serving in any way in or with the United States military after 6 December 1941, that distinguished himself or herself apart from his or her comrades by brave or praiseworthy achievement or service, that did not include participation in aerial flight. The act justifying award of the medal must be performed while fighting an enemy of the United States, or while involved in conflict with an opposing/foreign force. It can also be awarded for heroism while serving with friendly forces engaged in combat against an opposing military in which the United States is not a belligerent party.Heroism carried out under acts as described, which are of a lesser degree than those awarded of the Silver Star, will justify the award of the Bronze Star Medal. While of a lesser degree than the award of the Legion of Merit, the act justifying the awarding of the Bronze Star Medal must have been praiseworthy and accomplished with merit. It can be awarded for a single act of value or mer itorious service. The Bronze Star with V is awarded fro valor or bravery during combat actions against an enemy force. It is the fourth highest award for military combat bravery. 04 Background President Roosevelt received a memorandum from General George C. Marshall, dated 3 February 1944, stating that: The fact that the ground troops, Infantry in particular, lead miserable lives of extreme discomfort and are the ones who must close in personal combat with the enemy, makes the maintenance of their morale of great importance. The award of the Air Medal have had an adverse reaction on the ground troops, particularly the Infantry Riflemen who are now suffering the heaviest losses, air or ground, in the Army, and enduring the greatest hardships. Two years earlier, the Air Medal had been created to raise the morals of airmen. In turn, the ground troops in Infantry were eligible to wear the Bronze Star had they endured combat action during their time in the World War Two theater of operations. In an announcement in the War Department Bulletin No. 3, dated 10 February 1944, President Roosevelt gave by Executive Order 9419 dated 4 February 1944, retroactive to 7 December 1941, the authorization for the Bronze Star Medal. President Kennedy, per Executive Order 11046 dated 24 August 1962, amended the Executive Order to also include individuals serving with friendly military forces.Per a study done in 1947, the guideline was put into action that gave the retroactive award of the Bronze Star Medal to those who had been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge or the Combat Medical Badge during World War II. The decision for this action was based on the fact that the badges were awarded only to soldiers that had suffered the hardships which had produced the support of the Bronze Star Medal by General Marshall. Both of these badges required approval by the commander and a citation in orders. The Bronze Star Medal may be awarded for the following services: Meritorious Service in a combat zone (not necessarily combat action), an heroic achievement, or heroic service during combat operations against an enemy.Civilians are also authorized earning the Bronze Star as well. A photo journalist during Vietnam, Joe Galloway, was awarded the Bronze Star with V for valor for rescuing a badly injured soldier during a battle in 1965 when he was reporting for the United Press International (UPI) News.

Energy Storage Moves to New Heights Part 2
Energy Storage Moves to New Heights Part 2 Energy Storage Moves to New Heights Part 2 Energy Storage Moves to New Heights: Part 2 Part One of Energy Storage Moves to New Heights explored the background of the Max Bögl Winds innovative turbine system. This section delves into how theyre made and operate. The contractor fitted precast-concrete segments on top of a poured-in-place foundation connected to the tanks. The segments are machined to one-tenth of a millimeter with a milling machine to allow them to be stacked directly on top of each other using dry joints. At Gaildorf, they are bolted together and post-tensioned. A steel tube was then installed to top off the tower for the turbine connection. The design and technique allows construction to be completed quickly, within one week, company officials say. Batteries are becoming a more economic and reliable solution for smoothing delivery of renewable energy to the grid, or providing frequency regulation. But pumped storage is a better option under the right circumstances, Kleineheismann says. She notes it is proven technology with a very long operating history and a design life of at least 50 years. But this option requires at least a 200-meter fall height from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir for efficient operation, she says. The Gaildorf wind energy project utilizes pumped-storage to help integrate renewable energy into the grid. The wind turbines now are operating and feeding power directly to the national grid. The system is also designed for peak shaving, provide frequency regulation and contribute to the spot market. When finished and operating later this year, the storage component will have a response time within 30 seconds, Kleineheismann says. The reservoirs have a storage capacity of 70 MWh of power. While batteries have a faster response time, they have a shorter lifetime, present issues for recycling, and have a higher carbon footprint, she claims. More for You: Catch up on the latest Environmental Engineering at ASME.org. The new design elements for the pumped storage scheme helped it qualify for 7.3 million Euros in grants from The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Construction and Reactor Safety. Total project costs have been reported at $81 million, but the firm will not confirm the amount. Research and development costs for the pilot will not be reflected in the cost of future projects, but capital expenditures for the water battery will be 300 to 400 Euros per kWh, Kleineheisman says. Incorporating what becomes a water reservoir into the tower foundation on a hill or mountain eliminates the construction of a standard reservoir, a costly major earthmoving project that generally draws environmental opposition. The power plant is fitted with reversible Francis turbines. Instead of specifying steel pipe for the penstocks, the firm moved to high-pressure, 2-meter-diameter polyethylene pipe, a first for a pump-storage project. The pipe was installed using a custom-built 100-meter-long platform that worked along a 6-to-10-meter-wide corridor on existing roads, reducing environmental impact. Gaildorf is a pilot project for Bögl, which now is actively marketing the system globally. Kleineheismann says projects can be built modularly in increments of 16, 24 or 32 MW, using turbines from a variety of manufacturers. For international projects or those in remote areas, the firm also provides a mobile factory to manufacture precast elements using local materials. For Further Discussion

Protect Yourself from Work-at-Home Scams
Protect Yourself from Work-at-Home Scams Protect Yourself from Work-at-Home Scams I talk with people every day who have been burned by, or are skeptical of, telecommuting and work-from-home job opportunities. And for good reason. In the current economy there seems to be even more scams and âtoo good to be trueâ opportunities targeting people who want or need to work from home. Unfortunately, its important to acknowledge the abundance of work-at-home scams. It is always important to steer clear of all jobs that: Make claims that are too good to be true (e.g., $3,000 for 5 hours of work per month). Require upfront payment for training, supplies, or to learn secrets for getting rich while working from home. Say you dont need any job skills or work experience. Ask you for any personal financial information, such as credit card numbers or bank account information. Bottom line- if a job opportunity doesnt make sense or seems suspicious in any way, it is probably a scam. Trust your gut, and do research before applying to any job. Most of the time, people are successfully scammed because they let their guard down, or are caught in a moment of desperation to find a job. Dont let your need to find a job overshadow your sense of caution. Always ask for time to consider a job offer if youre suspicious the company isnt legitimate. And never accept a job thats been offered to you without so much as an interview. Scammers thrive on catching you off-guard when your defenses are down. Here are a lot more tips on protecting yourself from work-at-home scams.

So if not me, who did get the job
So if not me, who did get the job So if not me, who did get the job When two candidates are equally experienced, equally capable, and equally impressive, who gets the job? Well, when two companies have similar products, with similar ratings, and similar prices, which do you pick? If you think about it, you might say: âthe one that wants my business more.â The saleswoman made an extra effort, or the people at the store went out of their way to be kind, or itâs as simple as they just smiled back and said âweâd like your business.â Itâs no surprise: we prefer to buy from companies that make us feel like weâre a welcome part of their community. And who gets the job if the applicants are equals? The candidate with a passion for the business. A zeal for the industry. An excitement. An enthusiasm. A zest for the art, and the craft, and the science, of what makes a company in the field succeed. In todayâs economy - a sophisticated economy increasingly based on design, thinking work, proprietary creativity, and the ability to grasp and ap ply complex intellectual abstractions - the need is greater than ever for those who can⦠think. And thinking work is different from the typical jobs of even a generation or two past. A steel mill manager, a radio set salesman, or a train operator could measure their success in physical quantities: how much steel poured, sets sold, or tons shipped. In an information economy, on the other hand, the measures of success are increasingly intangible. The iPod was better than other MP3 players not because it had more, but because it had fewer buttons and features - the right buttons and features for music on the go. A restaurant chain displaces a competitor because it feels more (or less) like home. A shoe company thrives because it gives away half the pairs that you buy. Even vacuum cleaners, cars, and backyard grills are made, marketed and sold in ways that were inconceivable in the last century. Producing these products and services, consequently, is less a function of the volume of resources that are put in. In generations past, more raw materials, capital equipment, or men punching your time clock meant more finished products or services coming out the other side. Today, itâs often more important how little you put in, or how artfully you arrange the features. Finding people who can make those decisions well, and then execute on those decisions, is difficult for bosses. They have to figure out who is going to understand the customer better, the manufacturing process better, the marketing better, the interface better, and so on. Whatâs more, bosses need to determine whoâs going to stick with it - there are a lot more forks in the road, and bumps along the way, in this intangible world. Perseverance through the inevitable fumbles and fiascos is needed because without perseverance there are no victories. And what bosses have discovered is that somebody who is passionate about the business tends to be a better employee and a better professional to work wi th. Because somebody who is passionate is inherently motivated, and internally driven to succeed, they try harder to find answers. They think up clever stuff on their own. They enjoy the business, and the customers, and the industry so much that theyâre always discovering new things or perceiving additional ways that the business could succeed. In short, passionate people are better employees because they care more than dispassionate people. Passionate people care more than the average employee, they care more than the average applicant, and they care more about their industry than, on average, you do.And thatâs why - if youâre not excited about the industry, the company, the opportunity - you might not get the job. Itâs a common reason people get passed over, turned down, or put in the ânice to haveâ pile.If you truly want success in this modern business world, you need to do what youâre actually passionate about. Otherwise, youâre just unfairly stacking the dec k in someone elseâs favor. Iâm rooting for you.p.s. This guy, for example, is ridiculously passionate about his âspecialâ job.

4 Cover Letter Tips for the Unemployed
4 Cover Letter Tips for the Unemployed 4 Cover Letter Tips for the Unemployed A period of unemployment might be a bump on your career path, but it need not define you. Start the journey to a fabulous new position with a cover letter that generates excitement rather than laments your situation. Try the following four cover letter tips for the unemployed to successfully write about your unemployment in a cover letter! Here are four cover letter tips for the unemployed: 1. Concentrate on how you fit with the company instead. According to career coach Lavie Margolin, author of Lion Cub Job Search: Practical Job Search Assistance for Practical Job Seekers, there is no need to emphasize unemployment on the cover letter. âJust like any opportunity, when one is working or not working, focus on the needs of the employer in a cover letter. It should speak to relevant experience (current, or in this case, past) to the job for which you are applying as well as tell why you are passionately interested in the position.â 2. Avoid a long explanation. Donât waste valuable space dwelling on the particulars of your unemployment. Supply potential employers with what they need to know, and move on to impressing them with what you can offer. Marcelle Yeager, president of Career Valet, recommends transparency but says that you do not need to give all the details. âProvide enough information to explain your state of unemployment. If you left a job because it wasnt a good fit anymore, you should relay this in positive terms (e.g., you are fully committed to making a career change and/or move to X organization and why this makes sense for that company in terms of your background and their goals). If you were laid off, its okay to say why if it was due to company restructuring. If it was a result of personal issues, you should be more careful and concentrate on where youre trying to go next.â Giving too much information also can unintentionally dig a hole. For instance, stating that you had to move away from your previous job in order to take care of a loved one might raise concerns about divided attentions or stress levels. A safer, but still accurate, statement would be that you moved to be closer to family. 3. Donât show bitterness. Bad-mouth past employers or coworkers and youâll definitely make hiring managers wonder how you contributed to your unemployment situation. Companies want positive people who get along well with others and make the best of any situation. Refrain from negativity. 4. Demonstrate good use of time. Lastly, build a reputation as a productive go-getter. Energy attracts attention. âIn terms of unemployment, address how you are currently engaged in an active full-time job search and what you are doing to improve your skills in the meanwhile, such as participating in online training or doing consulting,â Margolin says. Talk about mastery of a new skill or how volunteer experiences increased your leadership abilities. Youâll have prospective employers eager to put an end to your unemployment!
